Way back when smartphones first started to appear the general idea would be that the phone would basically be a web browser and you would access useful web pages. Iphones and the Palm Pre where designed with the web in mind. The Palm Pres operating system was named WebOS.
Things did not go as planned. Apps came along. Initially intended to do things for which the web was not the best solution, Apps became a really big deal. Everyone on the planet seems to have an app for you to download to your phone. Which is better, to have the web in your pocket or ten thousand apps?
